However, even everyday individuals can become trailblazers simply by pursuing their dreams.
Meet Dylan Kuehl, a 38-year-old resident of Olympia, Washington, who had a seemingly simple goal: to earn a college degree. However, Kuehl was no ordinary student. Living with Down syndrome, a genetic condition that affects cognitive and intellectual abilities, he faced unique challenges. Undeterred, fueled by determination and inspiration, Kuehl pushed himself harder than ever before and emerged as a proud graduate of The Evergreen State College, etching his name in the annals of educational trailblazers.
In the face of discouragement, when people doubted his readiness for college, Dylan Kuehl refused to give up. Instead, he surrounded himself with a supportive “yes team” that believed in his aspirations and provided him with the tools to succeed. This unwavering determination led to a remarkable achievement: out of over 900 individuals, Kuehl was selected as one of three to deliver a graduation speech, a testament to his exceptional journey.
With a passion for painting and dancing, Kuehl has now earned a Bachelor of Arts in writing. By accepting his well-deserved diploma, Kuehl has not only paved the way but also achieved a significant victory for inclusiveness and diversity. As the first individual with Down syndrome to graduate in the 51-year history of The Evergreen State College, he has left an indelible mark.
