An Officer and a Gentleman’s unforgettable love story saw Naval Officer Zack Mayo sweep factory worker Paula off her feet, leaving viewers longing to be as beautiful as Debra Winger. Richard Gere’s portrayal of Officer Zack Mayo in navy whites set the standard for romantic tales that fans still daydream about today.
Sharing the screen with Tinseltown’s most desirable leading men, Debra Winger left many green with envy.
Even at 67, Winger remains stunningly beautiful. Recently, she took to Instagram to share glimpses of herself, showcasing her transition from brown hair to embracing her naturally wavy gray locks.
Winger’s rise to fame began with her starring role in the 1976 film “Slumber Party ’57,” which opened doors for her to join the popular TV series “Wonder Woman” (1979). In the show, she portrayed Drusilla, the younger sister of Lynda Carter’s Diana Prince/Wonder Woman. Although she was offered more frequent appearances, Winger declined due to concerns of being typecast in that role.
As it turns out, her decision proved to be fruitful as the early ’80s became a period of prosperity for the emerging star, with no regrets for her choice.
During the peak of her early career, Debra Winger garnered abundant acclaim from both the Academy and Golden Globes for her exceptional performances in three iconic films of the 1980s.
In 1980, she captivated audiences in “Urban Cowboy,” alongside the charismatic John Travolta, who had already mesmerized fans with his suave dance moves in “Saturday Night Fever” (1977) and “Grease” (1978). Winger portrayed the character Paula in “An Officer and a Gentleman” (1982) and delivered a remarkable performance in “Terms of Endearment” (1983), where she portrayed Emma, a young woman facing her mortality, while navigating a complex relationship with her overbearing mother Aurora, played by Shirley MacLaine.
Despite her immense success, Winger decided to carve out some time from her demanding acting schedule, taking a brief hiatus from Hollywood. Even after more than four decades since her rise to stardom, speculation continues to circulate regarding the reasons behind her departure.
However, Winger maintains that her decision to take a break from Hollywood was motivated by personal, not professional, reasons, dispelling any lingering rumors about her departure from the industry.
“I wasn’t interested in the roles that were coming my way. I had already experienced those or felt those emotions before. I needed something that would challenge me. My life itself presented more challenges than the roles, so I wholeheartedly embraced it,” Winger candidly shared with People.
After her appearance in the 1995 romantic comedy “Forget Paris” alongside Billy Crystal, Winger made the decision to take a six-year hiatus. During this time, she relocated to New York City and shifted her focus towards her relationship with actor Arliss Howard, whom she married in 1996. The couple welcomed a son named Gideon Babe in 1997, and Winger also became a stepmother to Howard’s son from a previous marriage, Sam. Additionally, she has another biological child, Noah Hutton, whom she had while married to her first husband, Timothy Hutton, from 1986 to 1990.
In 2021, Winger made an appearance in “With/In,” the second volume of an anthology drama film. She starred in the segment titled “Her Own,” which was both written and directed by her husband, who also shared the screen with her.
Reflecting on her career and surroundings, Winger expressed, “I’m not quite sure what Hollywood really is. I currently reside under the iconic sign, and I can’t help but laugh at the concept. Los Angeles is a physical place, but the idea of Hollywood doesn’t truly resonate with me.” She added, “Although, I’m aware that there may exist some exclusive circles that I am simply not aware of.”
