In an effort to make their daughter’s her last birthday as memorable as possible, the family of a four-year-old girl diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in October sought to do everything they could.
“When you hear news like that, your world just comes to a standstill. It’s hard to even breathe, let alone process everything. She’s only four years old,” Heather Krings, Delaney’s mother, shared. According to reports, Delaney Krings from Pewaukee, Wisconsin received a cancer diagnosis and was informed that she may only have six weeks to live.
This story is truly heart-wrenching. We’re sharing it for anyone who would like to contribute to the happiness of Delaney Krings, a little girl battling terminal brain cancer, by sending her a birthday card. Delaney’s mother, Heather, expressed, “She brought light and love to people. That’s why she’s our angel. And, apparently, she’s being called elsewhere to finish her angel work.”
Delaney was receiving treatment at Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee, and her parents were taking turns watching over her so that she would never be alone and would always be surrounded by a loved one. In the following week of October, Delaney went home for hospice care. Heather shared, “You can’t really convey to a kid that they won’t be around much longer. So she knows she’s in the hospital because of the ‘owies’ in her head.”
Delaney celebrated her fifth birthday last December 16th, and her family had hoped to make it an extra special occasion. They requested people from all around the globe to send her birthday cards, with the aspiration of receiving cards from every continent if possible.
Her family remains optimistic and believes that as long as Delaney is still aware of what’s going on, can laugh, hear, see, and recognize them, they can ignore the clock ticking down. They are determined to make the most of the time they have left with her.
“As long as she still knows what’s going on, she can laugh, she can hear, she can see, she knows us, she remembers us. That clock, you have to ignore it because what’s our purpose here? To make whatever time she has left as best as we can.”
Despite the odds against her, she surpassed her fifth birthday, celebrated Christmas and welcomed the new year.
Her courageous fight garnered support from her community, as over 700 cars paraded through her Pewaukee neighborhood in December for her final birthday celebration. However, her story reached far beyond the borders of the state, as she received hundreds of birthday cards from across the globe, including Antarctica.
Unfortunately, she did not make it. She passed away last February.
A gathering of hundreds last February was held to commemorate the life of Delaney Krings, who was five years old at the time of her passing.
The memory of a 5-year-old Pewaukee girl continues to resonate through a community of people whose lives she touched. Delaney Krings fought bravely against her terminal brain cancer diagnosis until the very end.
A hundreds of individuals gathered both physically and virtually to honor the significant impact of Delaney’s life. Her older sister, Brooklyn, shared a heartfelt promise, saying, “Delaney Judith Krings, I promise to always remember and love you. Whenever I feel sad, I will recall you and have a smile on my face.”
Delaney’s family expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of love they received from friends, family, and even strangers during their journey.
“Thank you for standing by us and for supporting one another,” said Heather Krings, Delaney’s mother.
The family also mentioned that Delaney’s infectious smile and joyful giggles remained a constant presence until her last moments.
Let’s keep Delaney and her family in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Thank you!
