Dad makes the courageous decision to raise his baby with Down syndrome single-handedly after Mom considers placing their child in foster care

Each day, countless newborns enter the world with unique conditions that set them apart. Every baby, regardless of their differences, possesses inherent beauty and deserves boundless love, care, and attention. Tragically, not everyone acknowledges this truth. Shockingly, there are parents who, guided by their own judgmental perspectives, contemplate abandoning or rejecting their children simply for not meeting their narrow standards of perfection.

Defying the supposed era of enlightenment and reason, babies born with Down syndrome continue to face uncertainty due to prevailing prejudice surrounding the condition. However, one Russian father is determined to eradicate all stigmas associated with Down syndrome while independently raising his son, Misha, who is affected by the condition.

According to reports, Evgeny Anisimov, 33 years old, has embarked on a mission to demonstrate to the world that children with Down syndrome are equally deserving of love and acceptance. In the face of his wife’s departure, unable to cope with their son’s diagnosis, Evgeny courageously shoulders the responsibility of raising Misha all on his own.

The news of their son’s condition struck the couple just one minute and 39 seconds after his birth, when a doctor uttered the words, “I fear that your baby has Down Syndrome.”

In an interview with Bored Panda, the father shared, “When I first heard the possibility of my son having Down Syndrome, I was at a loss. I felt my duty was to suppress my emotions, engage my thoughts, and provide support to my wife, as I believed it would be harder for her. We were told that we would receive the test results in a few days, so I chose not to disclose anything to her until then.”

He went on, saying, “I vividly recall leaving the hospital and shedding tears upon learning about my son’s diagnosis, although it was only a brief moment. Later, I felt somewhat embarrassed by those tears. After all, nothing had fundamentally changed in my life.”

“I still possessed two arms, two legs, and my professional knowledge remained intact. My determination, activity, and curiosity were all intact. Everything went according to my plan when my son was born. However, he was unique, and his life and future held significant importance. And here I was, venting my frustration! It felt like some form of selfishness. Wasn’t it unfair? No, it was my responsibility. We didn’t undergo amniocentesis—it’s true that the chances were low, but still. We desired a child, so we took on the responsibility. After all, there were numerous possibilities: autism, cerebral palsy, genetic mutations… And I later discovered that Down Syndrome wasn’t the worst outcome.”

That very same night, Evgeny embarked on his research journey about Down syndrome.

“I learned that in Europe, individuals with Down Syndrome are well-integrated into society, capable of living and working independently,” he shared. “However, this newfound knowledge didn’t influence the decision I had already made.”

Leaving his son was never a consideration for the dedicated father. Regrettably, his wife did not share the same sentiment.

“Never did the thought of abandoning my son at an orphanage cross my mind; that would be inhumane,” he expressed. Eventually, he and his wife went their separate ways, and now Evgeny single-handedly raises Misha.

He articulated, “When a child enters this world, they question the world around them, asking, ‘Am I wanted? Am I needed?’ And I respond with unwavering certainty, ‘Son, you are needed!’ Being by his side, even if it means being alone, is an ordinary act for an ordinary man. Let me emphasize—I am an ordinary man, not some kind of hero.”

Evgeny’s objective is to raise awareness about Down syndrome, ensuring that no prospective parent considers having a child with the condition as a punishment or insurmountable obstacle.

In an interview with Bored Panda, he expressed, “Through the articles currently being published about Mishka and me, my intention is to instill this belief in society. I also aspire to support and inspire others who find themselves in a similar situation, whether presently or in the future. I strive to connect with those within my reach and correspond with those far away. My hope is that those currently facing challenges, as we once did, will come across our story. Fear not! Everything will be alright!”

With a devoted and remarkably loving father like Evgeny, we can be confident that Misha will experience a wonderful childhood and lead an extraordinary life. Evgeny’s inspiring presence is truly remarkable, and Misha is undeniably fortunate to have been blessed with him.
