Kristy McNichol, now 60 years old, is a former American child star who decided to leave the spotlight during the height of her career. While the entertainment industry today may not know much about her, she was definitely one of the most popular actresses in Hollywood back in the ‘70s and ‘80s.
She started her acting career at 8 years old and won two Emmy awards for her role in the TV drama ‘Family’ where she played the character Buddy.
The actress was also in the film “Only When I Laugh” where she received a Golden Globe nomination. Afterward, she starred in the sitcom “Empty Nest” but decided to leave the show midway through its run.
Kristy was one of the main cast in “Empty Nest”, and her decision to leave the show in 1992 left a big gap in the series’ appeal and storyline. However, she returned in 1995 for the finale and explained the reason she left. She said that she had to choose between continuing the show and not being well.
The actress also mentioned that leaving the show was the hardest decision but was important for her health. She was suffering from a disorder similar to manic-depressive illness at 18 years old. The condition worsened as she grew older and had an uncontrollable chemical imbalance by the age of 30.
In 2001, Kristy officially announced she was quitting after 24 years of acting. She said that she needed to focus on herself and eventually realized that it was the best thing that happened to her.
The former actress developed a profound love for many things like traveling and yoga. She also has improved spirituality and quiet home life.
Kristy mentioned that she loves to travel and see the world, with Hawaii as one of her favorite destinations.
Currently, she sings in the Los Angeles Valley Community College Choir and provides support for the Los Angeles Valley College Foundation.
Kristy also stated how music can make a significant difference as she witnessed it happen to her and other people. She said that she enrolled in the Los Angeles Valley College Music program as she always liked singing and wanted to sing in a choir.
The former actress also mentioned that she loved that the kids in the choir did not know of her and how their performance was always a fantastic experience.
In 2012, Kristy came out as a lesbian and revealed that she’s been living with Martie Allen for over 20 years. She decided to come out in public because she wanted to be more open about herself as she turns 50. This is also her way to help kids who feel different due to their sexuality feel like they’re not alone.
The former actress remarked that the current phase of her life is happy and serene. While Kristy did not mention having kids, she’s dedicated to raising her beloved miniature dachshunds.
People have been asking if she wanted to go back to acting, so Kristy said that she did not rule it out completely, however, the chances are slim. Right now, she is dedicated to music and traveling the world.
