Remembering Bob Nill: The Courageous Crossing Guard Who Sacrificed His Life to Save Children

Real-life heroes exist beyond the confines of movies and comics. These individuals often perform extraordinary acts at great personal sacrifice.

Back in February 18/2020 in Kansas City, a crossing guard named Bob Nill gave his life to protect children from a reckless driver. Nill, who was 88 years old, had worked as a crossing guard at Christ the King Parish School for five years and was beloved by the students, who called him “Mr. Bob.”

According to reports, a black sedan sped through Nill’s crosswalk. Nill selflessly put himself in harm’s way to save two schoolchildren, pushing them out of the way as the car passed. Tragically, he was struck and later died from his injuries.

Nill’s nephew, Randy, said that his uncle’s brave act was not out of character, and that his job as a crossing guard was something he felt was important to help children and give back to his community.

The school released a statement on Facebook, calling Nill a hero and asking for prayers for his family and the witnesses to the accident. Bob Nill will always be remembered as a hero for his selfless actions that saved lives.
