This remarkable achievement has caught the attention of the university, as it is the first time such a joint graduation has taken place. The bond between this mother-daughter duo is so strong that people initially mistook them for sisters. Jessica Van Wagenen, the mother, fondly recalls the amusing encounters when she had to clarify their relationship and explain that they were embarking on this educational journey together.
As a retired marine, Van Wagenen had put her own aspirations on hold in order to prioritize raising her daughters. However, destiny intervened, offering her a chance to rekindle those dreams. Seizing the opportunity, she embarked on her educational pursuit, and to her delight, her daughter decided to accompany her on this path towards becoming registered nurses. Their joint commitment and shared journey have made this accomplishment all the more meaningful.
The mother explained, “Given our frequent relocations and the inconsistent presence of their father, I always believed that providing the girls with stability was essential. Therefore, I made the decision to forego my college education and dedicated myself to giving our children as much stability as possible by staying at home with them.”
Keelin Van Wagenen, the daughter, expressed her immense pride in her mother’s determination to pursue her aspirations. “Every day, I remind her how proud I am of her and her unwavering commitment to follow her dreams,” the daughter joyfully shared.
Both women have successfully embarked on their professional journeys. Jessica has established herself as a nurse in the operating room at Carteret Healthcare, utilizing her expertise in surgical care. On the other hand, Keelin has found her calling as a nurse specializing in pediatrics at ECU Health, where she brings her compassionate care to young patients. Their dedication and skill have enabled them to contribute meaningfully to their respective healthcare institutions.
