Mother advocates for using a leash to protect her child.

Parents have been engaged in a lively debate about the best ways to keep their children safe. From using car seats to covering electrical outlets, parents are willing to take extensive measures to protect their kids from harm and risks. However, there is one safety precaution that has sparked widespread controversy, and one mother has spoken up in support of it.

Desiree Hoye has ignited a discussion by sharing pictures and stories explaining why she uses a backpack leash for her toddler. At first, she admits that she used to think putting a child on a leash was something she would never do. After all, kids are not dogs, right?

But as time went on, Hoye noticed a concerning trend in the news. Every year, there are countless cases of children going missing, many of which could have been prevented if they hadn’t wandered away from their parents. She points out that more than 2,000 kids go missing every day, whether it’s due to accidents involving animals or abductions that happen in the blink of an eye.

Given these dangers, Hoye wonders if other parents can really blame her for wanting an extra layer of protection for her child. She emphasizes how young kids have a tendency to wander off and the overwhelming stress that comes with a missing child. For her, using a leash is a justified measure to ensure her child’s safety.

Hoye recounted an incident where someone criticized her for using a child leash, commenting, “Look at her putting her child on a leash… How awful.”

Critics express concerns about the suitability of harnesses for children. While there is no solid evidence that children have been harmed when harnesses are used correctly, there is also no conclusive proof that harnesses and leashes actually reduce harm to children. Therefore, it becomes a matter of personal preference. Some opponents worry about potential psychological implications, particularly if children feel self-conscious or associate leashes with dogs.

Despite the potential hazards and criticism, parents like Hoye firmly believe that leashes are worthwhile for the safety of their children. The disapproving glances or negative comments from others do not sway their determination to take extra measures to protect their kids. Hoye explained that she prioritizes safety every day because she loves her children more than anything else in the world. She would rather endure a few odd stares from strangers than never see her child’s precious face again. Ultimately, the decision to use a child leash or not is a personal one.
