Many of us never have the opportunity to see our dying wishes fulfilled, as life’s fragility and unpredictable nature often prevent us from making them come true. Whether it’s having loved ones gathered by our bedside, revisiting a special place, or meeting a personal idol, these final desires remain unfulfilled for many. One such wish belonged to Karina Courtmanche, a 79-year-old from Bethany, Connecticut. Despite its simplicity, her wish was incredibly dear to her heart: to see her cherished horse, Bella, one last time. Karina, under hospice care due to her limited time left, has had Bella as a beloved companion since the horse was a young foal. The bond they share is undoubtedly unbreakable. As her terminal illness progresses, Karina expressed her fervent desire to reunite with her four-legged friend to Michelle Walker, RN Case Manager for Connecticut Hospice.
During conversations with Karina, she continuously expressed her strong desire to see her beloved horse, Bella,” Walker shared. Considering Karina’s condition, it wasn’t a straightforward task of taking her to the stables for a visit. However, Walker and the nursing home staff were resolute in their determination to make the reunion happen. Collaboratively, they arranged for Karina to be transported via ambulance to Bittersweet Farm, Bella’s residence. Precautions were taken to ensure Karina’s comfort and safety, including providing a stretcher and immediate medical assistance if necessary.
Unquestionably, the long-awaited reunion between Karina and Bella was an emotionally moving event. Karina had the precious opportunity to feed carrots to her beloved companion and tenderly stroke her nose with affection. Walker expressed her own excitement and fulfillment in granting Karina’s final wish, recognizing its immense significance to her. According to reports, Bella will be lovingly cared for at Bittersweet Farm even after Karina’s passing.
