Zikhaya Sithole was walking home from the supermarket with a friend when they heard a woman crying out in distress. They immediately stopped and turned towards the source of the screams. There, they saw a mother standing outside her burning house, frantic because her children were still inside. Without a second thought, Zikhaya covered his face with his hat and rushed into the flames to rescue the trapped children.
Inside the burning shack, two one-year-old boys cried out in distress. Zikhaya entered the cabin and immediately heard the babies’ cries. He swiftly picked up one child from the bed and rushed outside, but the intensity of the flames prevented him from going back for the other child.
It was only when Zikhaya returned home that he realized he had sustained injuries. His face was severely burned, his eyes became sensitive, and his hands were wounded, rendering him unable to continue his work as a welder.
Covered in burns, his partner Mapaseka Monareng was taken aback. However, she quickly sprang into action, calling his relatives and paramedics while helping him remove his charred clothing.
Zikhaya Sithole firmly believes that he is willing to endure harm if it means saving a baby’s life. His partner expressed immense pride in his heroic act and what he was able to accomplish.
Nevertheless, he had no regrets about entering the hut. Despite only being able to save one child, he expressed a sincere desire to have rescued both of them.
Dr. Convy Baloyi, the President of African Covenant, expressed deep admiration for Zikhaya’s exceptional courage. In a society where men are often undervalued, Zikhaya fearlessly risked his life to rescue the children. The African Covenant community stands united with him on his path to recovery, offering their support and assistance in any way they can.
Furthermore, a collective effort has been initiated to nominate Zikhaya for the prestigious Mendi Decoration for Courage award, which recognizes individuals who have displayed remarkable bravery. This commendation aims to honor Zikhaya’s extraordinary act.
Both families of the two boys whom Zikhaya saved have personally visited him to express their heartfelt gratitude. Additionally, local contributions have been made to support his cause. Now, there is a global fundraising campaign underway to aid Zikhaya in his recovery process.
